LEE Ufan (b.1936-)
Born in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, Lee Ufan currently lives and works between Japan and France as an internationally acclaimed artist. After dropping out of the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University, he moved to Japan and graduated from the Department of Philosophy, College of Humanities and Sciences at Nihon University in 1961. He was one of the central figures of Mono-ha, a movement that emerged in the late 1960s around Yoshishige Saito’s studio at Tama Art University, playing a particularly vital role in articulating its theoretical framework.
His artistic practice, which highlights the simple presence and intrinsic qualities of raw materials such as wood, stone, and steel plates, continues to this day. Among his most celebrated works are his From Point and From Line series, defined by minimalist dots and lines. In 2010, the Lee Ufan Museum, designed by Tadao Ando, opened in Naoshima. In 2014, he was invited as the guest artist for the Contemporary Art Program at the Palace of Versailles. He is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Order of Cultural Merit (Hwagwan) from South Korea, the Légion d'honneur from the French government, the UNESCO Prize at the Shanghai Biennale, and the Mainichi Art Award
