About the ARTIST
LIAO Shiou-Ping
LIAO Shiou-Ping (b. 1936, Taipei, Taiwan) is widely regarded as the father of modern printmaking in Taiwan.
After graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, he continued his studies in Japan and France, where he trained at the renowned Atelier 17 in Paris.
Drawing inspiration from Taiwanese folk culture - including Lungshan Temple, Wanhua Market, and traditional festivals - he developed a distinctive visual language through a wide range of printmaking techniques.
After establishing his career in the United States, Liao returned to Taiwan to teach at National Taiwan Normal University, playing a pivotal role in shaping modern printmaking education through teaching, lectures, and international exchange.
Since the 1960s, his work has been exhibited internationally and collected by major institutions, including the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
In 2025, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts presented Liao Shiou-Ping at 90, a major retrospective celebrating more than six decades of artistic practice and his enduring contribution to Taiwanese printmaking.
