Flowers on the Fault Zone
Curator | Manray HSU
The "Indigenous Art Zone" at the Taipei International Art Fair (ART TAIPEI) enters its seventh edition this year (2026). Under the curatorial theme "Flowers on the Fault Zone," this year’s indigenous art zone responds to the situations of contemporary Indigenous peoples in Taiwan. Having endured long periods of colonial rule, during which assimilation policies led to severe cultural erosion, Indigenous communities have gradually reclaimed their agency, political rights, and cultural vitality through the fruits of democratization and the Indigenous rights movement since the 1980s. However, the accompanying forces of capitalist modernization and contemporary technology progress have introduced generational ruptures and environmental degradation. As a result, contemporary Taiwanese Indigenous peoples find themselves navigating survival as if rooted on a highly active, unstable earthquake fault zone. Within this landscape, contemporary artists — alongside an impressive number of creators across music, crafts, and literature — stand out as the true "flowers on the fault zone."
