Treating the body as the core of creation, Hsu Yung-Hsu approaches sculpture through intense physical engagement with clay. By merging bodily perception, touch, and endurance with the material itself, he creates works shaped through an ongoing dialogue between body, matter, and the external world.
His practice is rooted in labor-intensive processes that fully incorporate environment, climate, and firing conditions into the act of creation. Through continuous cycles of deconstruction and reconstruction, Hsu transforms the inherent heaviness of clay into remarkably thin, soft, and expansive forms. This tension between weight and lightness has become a defining characteristic of his work, resulting in large-scale ceramic sculptures rarely seen within the medium.
Centered on the idea of transcendence — transcending life through creation and transcending creation through life — Hsu continually pushes the physical and conceptual limits of his practice. His works emerge through repetitive gestures of flowing, layering, accumulation, and expansion, as if driven by instinctive bodily movement. Nest-like and porous structures evolve from these gestures, forming spaces where material, memory, and consciousness intertwine beyond linear time.
Through this deeply embodied process, Hsu transforms personal experience into sculptural language. His works carry strong primal and biological qualities: at once unified and fragmented, fragile yet forceful, revealing an enduring vitality and the persistent momentum of life itself.
