Amy Hui Li approaches painting as a multilayered bodily structure, using materials such as organza, she repeatedly tears and reshapes the surface to explore subtle, intimate corporeal and emotional sensations. Delicate, vein-like fibrous lines run across the surface, while mirrored structures on both front and back open up a candid dialogue between interior feeling and outward expression, giving the work a skin-like sensitivity.
This work was inspired by the complex friendship—marked by mutual admiration—between the female lead and another chess player in the TV series “The Queen’s Gambit”, which evoked the artist’s own past experiences and memories. Deep dark red, vivid bright red, pale pink, and faint white tug at and intertwine with one another, echoing the title “to unrequited love”—a one-sided love that surges as an undercurrent within the heart.
