Natsumi Kawasaki describes park plantings, nearby gardens, and other scenes shaped by someone else as “borrowed landscapes.” She layers views from different times and places within the same picture, allowing unrelated images to permeate one another and generate a new landscape. Through repeated accumulation, scraping, polishing, and wiping of paint, plants and scenery emerge between representation and abstraction.
