Hyeonsu Jo combines traditional Korean painting techniques with new materials such as copper leaf to explore the ever-changing essence of nature. Her practice began with an observation: metal sculptures placed outdoors would slowly oxidize, their colors shifting with time, weather, and season. Intrigued by this natural transformation, she started incorporating copper into her work—its corrosion becoming part of the composition itself, forming living, evolving landscapes on paper.
She also uses Dakjongi, Korean traditional paper, for its warmth, texture, and responsiveness to shadow and light. In her installation works, she explores this quality through delicate arrangements and shifting illumination. A recent piece inspired by her walking path captured the quiet cycles of life—growth, decay, regeneration—through overlapping paper forms and light play, inviting viewers to walk through a recreated landscape.
