The works explore feelings of anxiety, isolation, and the subtle distance that exists between individuals in modern life. The figures appearing in the sculptures are dressed in white hooded garments, avoiding physical and emotional contact with others as though protected by a shell. These forms symbolize the psychological barriers unconsciously formed between oneself and the outside world, as well as the hesitation and unease often associated with interpersonal relationships.
At the same time, the figures do not completely reject the presence of others. Their expressions and gestures—appearing to quietly observe those around them—suggest the contradictory emotions often found in contemporary society: maintaining an appearance of indifference while remaining inwardly conscious of others. Through restrained facial expressions and delicate bodily gestures, the artist carefully depicts unspoken anxiety and loneliness, inviting viewers to reflect on their own emotional experiences.
This distinctive body of work has been recognized both in Japan and internationally. The artist received the International Takifuji Art Award in 2001 and the NEXT DOOR T&G ARTS Award in 2007. In 2009, the artist published the art book 『Leave me alone』 through Geijutsu Shinbunsha. In 2023, the artist collaborated with Noritake on a limited-edition mug project.
The artist’s works are also included in the collection of Jean Pigozzi. Through quietly restrained sculptural expressions, the works continue to address the emotional and psychological realities of contemporary society.
