ZHAO JUN  | Ode to the Yellow River (Part 8)  | Oil on Canvas   | 120×60 cm  | 2025

This work uses the Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River as its medium, employing figurative oil painting to poetically translate a natural wonder into a cultural totem. The creative process begins with a localized observation of Hukou's "thunderous power and towering waves," abandoning sentimental depictions to directly confront the raw, primal force of the Yellow River. It then explores the appropriate expression of materials and colors, using thick layers of paint with a palette knife to sculpt the rock's stratification and the explosive tension of the water waves. Using ochre and earth yellow as a base, it recreates the texture of silt carried in the water flow through the interplay of warm and cool tones. Thin layers are then used to diffuse the mist, constructing an oriental atmosphere where reality and illusion coexist. The surging Yellow River becomes a metaphor for the lifeblood of civilization, and the solidified rocks become a symbol of national character, achieving a triple unity of natural scenery, oil painting language, and cultural spirit. The static canvas carries the eternal, ceaseless energy of the Yellow River civilization.
