We are pleased to share Hsueh Hung-Wei’s award-winning painting, recipient of the“2025 National Oil Painting Exhibition – Chen Yin-Hui Award” —The Quiet Uproar
The Quiet Uproar marks a pivotal shift in Hung-Wei’s recent artistic perspective. Rather than positioning himself directly within the urban scene, the artist adopts a shop window as a visual mediator, layering rainy cityscapes, flowing crowds, and his own gaze within a single pictorial space.
Within the painting, pedestrians, umbrellas, and reflected lights intertwine to form a dynamic, restless urban rhythm. In contrast, the inner surface of the glass—through reflection and obstruction—creates a quieter, almost suspended realm. This juxtaposition of motion and stillness places the viewer both inside the city and at a contemplative distance, generating a detached yet profoundly immersive viewing experience.
Through its layered imagery and distinctive canvas treatment, reality, reflection, and memory permeate one another. The work not only reveals Hung-Wei’s acute sensitivity to the tempo of contemporary urban life, but also invites a shared reflection on perception, distance, and inner states—rendering the painting both visually enduring and intellectually resonant.
