This work is inspired by the Shirahama Coast in Wakayama, Japan. The vivid blue sea set against the pure white limestone creates a striking and pristine visual contrast, earning the area the nickname “the Aegean Sea of Japan.” In this piece, the artist Kuan Hsien WANG moves beyond a singular expression of white, instead revealing layered variations of color within it to capture the subtle interplay of light and environment. Through the use of metal leaf, the surface of the rocks shimmers with a luminous quality, enhancing both visual tension and texture. Furthermore, the work is mounted in a folding screen format, allowing the image to shift with the viewer’s perspective. As one moves, multiple visual layers emerge, expanding the expressive possibilities of the composition.
