Ryota KANNO | Memory of the Blue | Epoxy, Wood, Mica | 30 × 30 × 3 cm | 2026

Ryota KANNO was born in 1988 in Kanagawa, Japan, and graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. Ryota Kanno incorporates natural phenomena into sculpture, creating works that embody both fusion and contrast. The process of deconstructing and reconstructing these phenomena can be seen as an interaction between different senses—much like how we connect memory through scent and temperature. After the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kanno gradually shifted his focus toward the inner world of human beings, developing “light sculptures” that reflect the fluctuating states of the human psyche. The soft illumination gives rise to dreamlike sculptural forms. For Kanno, what his practice ultimately seeks to present is not the artwork itself, but rather the phenomenon of light as it is reflected and transmitted through the work. In this sense, his practice can be described as a kind of “painting of phenomena.”
