Damian Elwes is known for his depictions of the studios of master artists throughout history, viewing the creative space as a gateway into the artist's inner world. In this 2022 work, Kusama's Studio, Elwes seamlessly integrates the physical space of Yayoi Kusama's Tokyo studio with the visual language of her most iconic painting series, My Eternal Soul (2009–2021). Rather than merely replicating the space, Elwes carefully composes everyday objects such as easels, tools, and unfinished works into a fantastical realm of repetitive patterns and vivid colors. He condenses and captures the temporal process of creation within a scene that appears realistic yet has been deliberately selected and reconstructed by the artist, thereby presenting Kusama's wholehearted, energetically charged state of creative being.
