Wou-Ki ZAO | No.121 | Lithography | 50.5 x 45.5 cm | 1959

ZAO Wou-Ki, a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France, was deeply immersed in the Western art world for many years. His paintings broke free from the constraints of conventional pictorial rules, enriching abstract aesthetics with the cultural depth of China. Vast and mysterious as the universe, his works convey an ethereal yet profound sense of space, expressing an expansive realm of nature infused with the breath of life. The creative journey of printmaking spanned nearly sixty years of ZAO Wou-Ki’s life. The catalogue compiled by the foundation records as many as 401 editions. Demonstrating remarkable mastery of techniques such as etching, lithography, and silkscreen printing, these works also reveal the evolution of his style from figuration to lyrical abstraction.
