Artist Hsu Wen-jung’s creative process begins with calligraphy and ends with calligraphy. The brushwork of cursive script is a resonance between the body and the breath; sculpture, meanwhile, allows this breath to continue breathing and flowing within space. His abstract works in mixed media represent another form of inner writing—not taking the form of characters, but embodying the essence of qi. Within the seemingly disordered layering and flow lie the traces of time and the marks of creation. His focus lies not on the reproduction of form, but on how form comes into being; not on the existence of space, but on how space is evoked by qi.
