Han Choong Seok explores the shifting distances we continuously negotiate in human relationships. Like hedgehogs that move closer and apart to avoid hurting one another, relationships are less a fixed state than an ongoing practice. In his paintings, owls gaze in different directions. Though they do not meet each other’s eyes, they seem quietly aware of one another, sharing the same space while maintaining distance. Through the familiar image of the owl, the artist gently evokes the subtle tension, balance, and wit that exist within relationships.
