This work by Kim Hyosun is not merely a reproduction of the traditional form of the Moon Jar, but rather a reconstruction of its generative principles within the discourse of contemporary materialism. Kim expands the structure where the upper and lower halves join to form a single entity into the concept of a "parallel hybrid." By juxtaposing distinct materials—porcelain, glass frit, and glass—she focuses on the phenomena arising from the relationships between these substances. The tension between the glass, which melts and flows at approximately 900°C, and the porcelain, which withstands high temperatures of 1250°C, creates a unique material friction. The resulting cracks, blurring, discoloration, and infiltration are not the products of strict control, but rather the outcomes of interaction. By embracing this unpredictability and risk as core sculptural elements rather than eliminating them, Kim transforms the production process into a singular "event." Consequently, this work transcends form-oriented ceramic sculpture to visualize the temporality of matter and the process of creation. While rooted in the balance and proportion of the traditional Moon Jar, it achieves a contemporary sensibility through the physical traces left on the surface, exploring new formal possibilities on the boundary between tradition and experimentation, and control and
chance.
